Meet Dubai\u2019s Nursery Of the Future<\/em> by Design by Roar<\/em><\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 UAE-based studio Roar<\/strong><\/em> has completed a\u00a0nursery\u00a0school in\u00a0Dubai\u00a0that features integrated technologies to encourage active play and introduce children to computer coding.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0interior design firm<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0headed by Pallavi Dean<\/strong><\/em> developed the Nursery of the Future<\/strong><\/em>, as part of a project backed by the UAE government that aims to transform the country into the \u201cworld\u2019s leading nation\u201d by the time of its centenary in 2071.<\/p>\n

The AREA 2071 initiative, which is backed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum<\/strong>, ruler of Dubai, comprises a suite of programmes and infrastructure projects focused on future innovation. As part of the programme the Nursery of the Future\u00a0is designed to be a prototype learning environment that eschews traditional subjects such as mathematics or reading, and instead confronts the contemporary challenge of \u201cpreparing children for jobs that don\u2019t yet exist\u201d.<\/p>\n

Roar\u2019s design for the nursery school responds to a brief calling for \u201ca world-class learning experience that instils the habits of innovation and futurism that will stay with children for life.\u201d According to Dean, the proposal removes the barriers between children and teachers and seeks to replace them with fluid and sociable environment that is both playful and stimulating.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the ways we bring this theory to life is by shunning traditional classrooms, instead of creating \u2018learning studios\u2019. These spaces are flexible, adaptable and nimble, to accommodate different teaching and learning styles.\u201d \u2013 Pallavi Dean<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The building\u2019s exterior features a \u201ccloud-like\u201d<\/a><\/strong> roof formed of staggered panels that combine to create a soft and ethereal volume. Created in collaboration with local studio\u00a0AR Gallery<\/a>, the roof form is intended to make the building feel safe and welcoming. Soft curves also feature throughout the interior, which was developed in response to research suggesting that children find curves more soothing than angular spaces. The undulating walls and ceilings were designed using computer software and constructed by a local boat builder.<\/p>\n

Paediatric neuroscience also informed the design direction and led the studio to employ a neutral material palette rather than filling the space with colour and cartoonish illustrations. This approach is intended to ensure the children and staff are the main sources of stimulation within the nursery.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that all elements of a school\u2019s environment \u2013 physical and human, interior and exterior \u2013 impact its educational framework.
