Designer Giles Miller<\/em> Creates Textured Kids Playhouses<\/em> for Koto Design<\/em> \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Giles Miller Studio believes in enriching the way we experience our surroundings.\u00a0The first consideration for any piece by Giles Miller Studio is always its environment \u2013 whether that is a natural landscape or the tone and direction of light in a public building. The resulting work brings a defining character to the surrounding space.<\/p>\n

KOTO teamed up with London based designers,\u00a0Giles Miller Studio to collaborate on \u201cGrace\u201d the elegant and sophisticated of the three playhouses. The interior is painted with chalk paint to allow the children to draw on all surfaces. Simple furniture elements including 2 storage seats and a small table allow children to make a home of it and keep their special books and toys stored safely. The floor surface is covered with natural grey felted wool to add some softness to the space.<\/p>\n

To achieve this, he used a hexagonal-shaped walnut tile, named the Alexander. Each piece was positioned at alternating angles to give the surface a three-dimensional, textured quality.<\/p>\n

Inside the cabin, walls are covered in chalk paint \u2013 allowing children to draw on its surfaces. Simple furniture items, including seats with hidden storage and a small table, give them a space to sit down and read a book.<\/p>\n

This is the first time\u00a0Miller<\/a>\u00a0has partnered with\u00a0Koto<\/a>\u00a0Design. Previous projects by the London-based designer include a\u00a0spherical sculpture formed from hundreds of reflective \u201cpennies\u201d\u00a0and a\u00a0shingle-covered pavilion for the English countryside.<\/p>\n

For this year\u2019s\u00a0Clerkenwell Design Week, he worked with watch brand Shinola to create a\u00a0pavilion made from 8,000 lightning-bolt-shaped pieces of plywood.<\/p>\n
