Theo Jansen\u2019s Inspired Strandbeast Kinetic Walking Bike \u21d2<\/em><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0When\u00a0Californian art and engineering collective Carv\u00a0began developing the Strandbeest-inspired walking bike in 2014, it\u00a0couldn\u2019t have known the beast that it would\u00a0create. Carv\u00a0had an idea. It\u00a0had a simple blueprint of a\u00a0Jansen\u2019s linkage. It\u00a0had a\u00a03D-printed\u00a0model of what the device might look like, some experienced craftsmen, and a few hours to spare for a few nights each week.<\/p>\n

Seven months and 700 man-hours later, when Carv\u00a0submitted its\u00a0creation to the Santa Barbara Solstice Parade, it\u00a0had half of a\u00a0bike\u00a0with three functional legs and over 450 custom-made components. \u201c[We] couldn\u2019t believe the thing actually worked,\u201d the collective\u00a0wrote yesterday in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n

Carv\u2019s customization efforts are impressive, but its\u00a0bike wouldn\u2019t exist if it weren\u2019t for the work of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, who released\u00a0his Strandbeests in 1990. The mechanical creatures\u00a0are part works of art, part machines, and \u2014\u00a0according to Jansen \u2014\u00a0part lifeforms. Strandbeests (\u201cbeach beasts\u201d) seem to be incredibly complicated, but function on a simple mechanism called a Jansen\u2019s linkage that, when used in conjunction with other Jansen\u2019s linkages, enabling the creatures to walk.<\/p>\n

Featured at youtube\u2019s\u00a0the Q channel,\u00a0the walking bicycle<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0Carv<\/a>\u00a0is not exactly the most practical product in the market, as it won\u2019t take you from one place to another in record time.\u00a0Instead, it will surely catch the attention of those around you as they\u2019ve probably never seen anything like this \u2014 unless you are at Burning Man\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0playa.<\/p>\n

Like land ships with legs, Strandbeests use sails to activate their joints and walk as the wind blows. Carv\u2019s walking bike replaced Jansen\u2019s sail with a couple of pedals and a bike chain. As the cyclist pedals, the linkage the feet move back and forth, one before the other, like the legs of a shy spider.<\/p>\n
