A Vintage Gas Station Transformed into a Colour Dream in Arkansas\u00a0\u21d2<\/span><\/strong><\/em> For the past five years, creative house Justkids has been curating and producing art in unexpected places across the cityscape of fort smith, Arkansas, enriching the community and urban area.\u00a0Now, french artist\u00a0Camille Walala\u00a0has joined \u2018the unexpected\u2019 project by turning a disused, vintage gas station into a thrilling piece of\u00a0public art.\u00a0\u2018I love this canvas \u2014 it was exciting to do something really bold, that stands out on a bigger scale,\u2019\u00a0Walala says of her time in Arkansas.\u00a0\u2018We had a great team of people working with us for a few days, most of them were locals from fort smith who came to help and it has been an amazing execution of the project.\u2019<\/p>\n

Influenced by\u00a0Walala\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0travels, the Memphis movement, optical art masters and the southern Ndebele tribe women, the immersive mural stretches across a 1950\u2019s gas station located at the intersection of grand avenue and 11th street.\u00a0\u2018Walala Pump & Go\u2019 embodies the artist\u2019s eclectic tribal pop style, with a sea of vibrant geometric patterns enriching the existing architectural elements. The creation of the eye-catching social space brought together the community and collaboration with local artist\u00a0Nate Meyers, as well as a group of skilful volunteers.<\/p>\n

\u2018The artist\u2019s bold and playful style incredibly enhances built space and architecture, creating welcoming social spaces,\u2019\u00a0said\u00a0Justkids<\/a>\u00a0curator Charlotte Dutoit on the project.\u00a0\u2018After five years of curating diverse visual projects in fort smith, I learned that a big part of good place-making is creating community and a sense of re-discovery of the beauty that is there, in the city, all along, and Camille\u2019s work does just that.\u2019<\/p>\n
