Coachella 2019<\/em> Has Some Incredible Colourful Art Installations\u00a0\u21d2<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0With\u00a0Coachella\u00a0music festival kicking off last weekend, we\u2019ve picked out five of the bright and wonderful\u00a0installations\u00a0filling the Californian desert site.<\/p>\n

Colourful triangles form screens around these 12 towers that\u00a0Di\u00e9\u00e9do Francis K\u00e9r\u00e9\u00a0has installed on Coachella\u2019s site in Indio, California. The\u00a0Berlin-based architect\u00a0drew on the baobab tree in\u00a0his native West African village of Gando, Burkina Faso, to design the structures as a place of shade and hub for festival goers. \u201cIn my culture, the baobab is the most important tree,\u201d said K\u00e9r\u00e9 in a project description. \u201cIt\u2019s the place where you get together, celebrate, and discuss,\u201d he added. \u201cIt also attracts animals. It is spiritual. Naturally, you will walk toward it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Artist duo\u00a0Dedo Vabo\u00a0has imagined a group of hippos has built this topsy-turvy\u00a0rocket to make it to outer space. Called Hazardous Interstellar Professional Operations, or HIPO for short, the installation also comprises a laboratory and mission control centre where the hippopotamus are envisioned working away. \u201cThe hippos\u2019 lack of intergalactic experience never dampens their determination to construct and launch a rocket and claim the dominant position in the interspecies space race,\u201d said the studio in a project description.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles studio\u00a0Office Kovacs\u2019 Colossal Cacti fills a barren parcel in the valley with colourful, blocky structures modelled on cacti. Staggered platforms form seating, while angular arms extend overhead to offer shade from the sun. Road reflectors pepper the surfaces like the spikes of a cactus and illuminate the sculptures at night.<\/p>\n

This 70-foot-tall (21-metre-tall) astronaut has made a return to the festival grounds this year, following an appearance at Coachella 2014. Los Angeles studio\u00a0Poetic Kinetics\u00a0made its suit worn and dirty to suggest there has been quite a journey. \u201cAll over its body there is evidence, or clues, of the fantastical story of where it went,\u201d said studio founder Patrick Shearn in a project statement. The astronaut often assumes a crouching position but can be animated to make other lifelike gestures. Its helmet can also project the names and faces of partygoers.<\/p>\n

Local painter\u00a0Sofia Enriquez\u00a0drew on ornamental paisley to build these wooden structures. Each top is painted in bright colours to contrast the muted desert hues, and they are also detailed differently, with some including fiery edges and floral patterns. Steps around the central paisley are also covered in different murals.<\/p>\n
